Contribution rules

  • Individual and Entity Donation Limit: An individual, group, or entity is restricted on the maximum amount they can donate to a candidate or political party. (Historically pegged or reviewed around ₦50 million for specific cycles, with ongoing advocacy by groups like SERAP for clear, updated publication ahead of upcoming ballots). 
     
  • Anonymous Donations: Anonymous donations to political parties or individual candidates are strictly prohibited. 
     
  • Disclosing Sources: Parties and candidates must identify and disclose the source of any large monetary or asset contributions to INEC. Contributions above statutory thresholds require complete donor details, including full names and addresses. 
     
  • Penalties: Violating campaign finance and contribution limits can lead to heavy fines (such as multiples of the excess amount donated) or imprisonment for defaults, as outlined in the Electoral Act.
